Walking country roads and forest paths meant that the usual phone map would not be suitable for our trek. With the relevant pages of a guide book torn out and tucked in my backpack and with the All Trails app on Paul’s phone, we set out, wondering if this would be enough to find our way.

Not to worry, those two resources together guided our wayfinding on the Via Francigena, but the route itself is well-marked at every juncture. Below is a collection of the signs, with some variety, that guided us to Rome.
